What is Newsies?
"In 1899, the streets of New York city echoed with the voices of newsies, peddeling the papers for Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolf Hearst, and other giants of the newspaper world. On every corner, you saw them carrying the banner, bringing you the news for a penny a pape. Poor orphans and runaways, the newsies were a ragged army, without a leader. Until one day all that changed...."
So I would hope that you'd know what Newsies is because you're on this website...but just in case you don't, here's what it's all about!
Newsies was a musical released in 1992, directed by Kenny Ortega, who most of you probably know from High School Musical. Sadly, the movie was a total flop in the box office and only made half of what was spent on production. However, once it was released on video and later DVD it became a cult classic. Today, there are still fans of the movie (hehe like me!) and with the new Broadway production (see the Broadway section for more) based off the movie, the Newsies fanbase is growing bigger and the love for the 1992 movie is being revived.
The movie is based off of the real events of the newsboys strike of 1899. The story mainly focuses around Jack Kelly and David Jacobs who are the leaders of the strike against Joseph Pulitzer who raised the price of papers for the newsies. Along with the story of the newsies, the movie also focuses on Jack Kelly discovering who he is and on how he dreams of going to better places like Santa Fe. Overall, Newsies is a heart-warming movie about standing up for what you believe in. It's an amazing movie for anyone. And not to mention the extremely catchy songs and EXTREMELY attractive guys ;)
Still even with the big cult following, a lot of people still haven't heard of Newsies, or at least the movie anyway. Most know about the Broadway show but they don't realize that it was based off of a movie which is just as good. This is one of the things that really upsets me.
