Newsies Finally on Broadway
This is really the only section about the Broadway show because this website is mostly dedicated to the movie. I just thought it was important to include this because it is so popular now and I know that Kenny Ortega had really been pushing to get this on Broadway ever since the movie totally failed.
In 2011, Disney Theatrical Productions released a stage musical production based on the original 1992 movie . The show premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey on September 25, 2011. Then, due to all of the positive reviews, the show made it's way to Broadway and ran from October 16, 2011 to August 24, 2014 at the Nederlander Theatre. The musical had received much praise, and it has won two Tonys for Best Score and Best Choreography. The cast has also done a lot of performances on TV. The success of the production brought Newsies back to life again and made up for how poorly the movie did back in the 90s. When the show came to an end, fans were devasted.
After the show closed, the North American tour began in October 2014 and will continue on to 2015. Only a few cast members came from Broadway, like Julian DeGuzman.
So basically, it's almost just like the movie except shorter and they take quite a few characters out. The big difference is that Sarah and Denton don't exist. They were both basically put into one character, Katherine Plumber, who is the reporter who covers the strike and is Jack's love interest. I kind of like that idea better because now the romance part makes a little more sense and Jack's love interest is actually relevant to the story. It also creates a more relatable female character for us girls.
Anyway, the musical includes most of the original songs with a new twist. They're the same songs but with some new words. Also, there are several new songs. The only original songs not in the musical are Medda's songs (not much of a loss). All of the songs were written by Alan Menken, who wrote the music for the movie too (so the new songs are amazing). You can buy the cast recording of all of the songs on iTunes or Amazon or wherever you get music.
I have nothing against the musical. It truly is amazing. It has amazing actors and singers, who I have fallen in love with already. There is a lot of dancing and tumbling and when I say a lot, I mean A LOT. However, the movie will always have a place in my heart.
Okay, so I saw the musical for the first time on tour on November 22, and I have to say it was everything I expected and more. It was absolutely perfect. They really fixed the issues with the plot and not the mention amazing dance numbers and dancers to perform them. I fell in love and afterwards I got to meet the cast. They were amazing and so sweet.
So is it better than the movie? Well, since I've seen it, in my opinion, yes it is. I mean I love the movie with all my heart, but the show was just amazing and it made the movie look pretty bad. When you think about it, there's a reason why nobody saw the movie when it originally came out.
